The libretto of the opera Dejima is a story in three acts inspired on the life and work of Dutch explorer/scientist Philipp Franz von Siebold who resided on the trading post of Dejima in the harbor of Nagasaki in Japan in the 1820s. It should be clear that the libretto is not an historical account of Siebolds residence but a dramatised tale of love, friendship and betrayal based on historical facts and set against the background of a unique patch of land in the 19th century where two completely different cultures could meet.
